The Most Important Question Ever

The Most Important Question Ever

Recently, I had the pleasure of being interviewed on the CBS Great Day Live show about the power of meditation to help us lower and manage our stress.  During the interview, I found myself having an internal chuckle about the fact that I had been super stressed that morning, snapping at my husband and eager to get the girls on their way to school.

My husband just returned from two weeks abroad and I was still feeling the heavy aftershocks of solo parenting.  My body was exhausted.  My eyes were grainy.  My mind was fried.  Luckily, I practice what I preach and I knew I needed to do something fast before I jumped over the cliffs of burnout.

So, as I got ready, I asked myself a question that has been a constant in my life for decades now.  A question that I have come to rely on to guide me through my days.  A question that acts as a direct line to my soul.

“What do I need right now?”

Taken at face value, this question seems simple and basic.  I need a break, obviously!

But if you look a little deeper, you’ll see it’s the opening for something really magical.

Close Your Eyes…

Close your eyes, beautiful…take a deep breath with me and let your body calm down.

What do YOU need right now?

What is your inner voice telling you?

I have found that the answers I hear are always exactly what my soul most needs to be in alignment, to thrive.

I need to talk to my soul sister.

I need to sit and meditate.

I need to go on a run.

I need to hug my girls.

I need to snuggle with my bird.

I need a nap.

That morning, as my red eyes and tired arms attempted to get my bangs just right, I heard my voice loud and clear say, I need to go to Weedon Island.

Weedon Island is my favorite preserve in the Tampa Bay area and just happens to be right next to the TV studio, so I planned to pack up my workout clothes and mentally relieved myself of the giant task list that was waiting for me after the interview.

It didn’t take me long on the preserve path to realize just how right my intuition had been.  I didn’t just want to come here, my soul needed this!

I needed the sun, the fresh air, the birds, the movement…each breath dissolved another layer of stress, another layer of exhaustion.  Each step brought me deeper into ME.  I needed it more than I knew.

(You can watch the Instagram reel of me talking about this on my walk in the preserve. ????)

The Question for Everything

You can ask yourself this question whenever you need guidance in just about every situation.

Don’t know what to eat for lunch? What do I need right now? will tell you whether your body really needs the salad or the pizza.

Have a big, scary decision to make? What do I need right now? will guide you down the path that gets you the best result for you.

Feeling strung out on your way to pick up kids from school? What do I need right now? will tell you exactly what to do to calm your mind and body down so you can be present with your kids.

In a fight with your spouse? What do I need right now? will hold your hand and guide you through the discomfort.

The More You Ask, The More You Hear

The true magic of this question is the listening ears you develop in the asking.  Try it with me.  Ask yourself again, What do I need right now?

And then…just listen.

Allow a space to exist that is void of the constant monologue of your mind.

Allow yourself to simply be, sitting with this question without an agenda, without expectations.

Let your intuition whisper to you.  Or flash a vision in your head.  Or communicate with you in all the ways that she can.

Let the answer find you.

As you ask yourself this question over and over again, and listen over and over again, you will begin to develop an intimate understanding of your inner voice.  You’ll recognize her easily.  And you’ll begin to hold hands with her on this journey of yours, trusting her more and more with every single answer.
